There is an excellent exhibition of ethnic art at the National Art Center Tokyo. The exhibition, “The Power of Images” shows a large number of works from The National Museum of Ethnology Collection. For any designer or artist the works on exhibit can provide a wealth of inspiration. I loved this yarn painting by a Mexican artist Elijio Carillo Vicente. Beeswax and pine resin is pasted onto a board and then yarn is applied into it. The pictures shows the rite to awaken the power of the gods, and a shaman is depicted sending the spirits of children to the realms of the gods. On the left side, the mara’akame shaman stands in front of a drum and conveys the spirit to the suspended altar. The children’s spirits are then taken to the realm of the gods by the eagle flying over the altar.
Nick Cave’s Soundsuits have the appearance of a cyber retake of African tribal dance and ceremonial costumes. The Soundsuit above looks fantastic. You can feel enormous energy and raw noise rushing up from the ground, all just from the costume alone. You can check out more at the Jack Shainman Gallery.
Beautiful oily video computer graphic world. Love the shiny colour surface of the phone and the gold computer scene.
I saw this sometime ago, but I decided to post it because I rather like the combination of man and machine. It seems Kafkaesque and reminds me of metropolis and the art of Europe around the beginning of the 20th Century.
A selection of some of the works on display here at Art Basel in Hong Kong.
(details to be updated later).
Really enjoyed these beautiful kinetic works by Elias Crespin.
Fantastic work, and what a title; “Super Mega Universe”!
A large number of works by Yayoi Kusama are on display. It was nice to see such variety, and nicely exhibited.
This is a stunning installation work called Oscillating Continuum, by Ryoichi Kurokawa, a Japanese sound and visual artist working in Berlin, Germany. The sound and the digital visuals combine beautifully and seamlessly with the sculpture. Really impressive work.
I first saw this music video on Department’s web site some months ago, it stuck in my head so much that I’ve decided to post it now. The idea is beautiful. Lucas is a modern day Romeo, described as, “a knight. He is anonymous, romantic and exceptional”. The music and the filming is excellent and truly inspiring.
Gravity is a Mistake! This is a wonderful short film by Till Nowak. If you a are going to start building fairground rides or creating art you should start by ignoring the rules of nature! They have even created a site for the Institute for Centrifugal Research with drawings for these amazing rides.

Brilliant work! Hopefully one day we can fall off the earth in just the right way!
